Our Story

That same intention is woven into every detail of West Acton Sauna.

Ari brings a lifelong dedication to health, performance, and resilience. As an athlete and marathon runner, he has always been drawn to practices that strengthen both body and mind. But everything deepened after a cancer diagnosis that changed their lives.

Together, they navigated the uncertainty of the medical system, leaned on their community, and emerged with a clearer understanding of what truly matters: health, connection, and time.

That experience didn’t just shape their perspective—it reshaped Ari’s work. He transitioned from a career in corporate tech to founding companies dedicated to supporting cancer patients, including Cancer Hacker Accelerator and Navis Health.

West Acton Sauna was born from all of it.

From the belief that wellness should be accessible.
That community is essential, not optional.
And that small, consistent rituals—like heat, cold, and rest—can change how we feel in our bodies and in our lives.

This isn’t just a place to sweat.

It’s a place to reset.
To reconnect.
To feel like yourself again.

We’re so glad you’re here.

We are Michelle and Ari Akerstein, the founders of West Acton Sauna.

What started as a simple way to get through long Massachusetts winters became something much more—a warm, welcoming space for contrast therapy, connection, and community.

But our story didn’t begin here.

We met in 2000 at Michelle’s “moving away” party. She had plans to start fresh across the country—and Ari decided to go with her. What followed were 21 years together in San Francisco and the Bay Area, building careers, raising a family, and shaping the life we now bring to Acton, Massachusetts.

West Acton Sauna is the natural intersection of everything we’ve lived and learned.

Michelle is the heart behind the experience. With over two decades as a teacher and principal in public education, she built her life around people—creating environments where others feel supported, seen, and connected. After stepping away to raise their three children, she continued that work in a different way: advocating for families, guiding parents through school systems, and building meaningful community wherever she could.
